PEC Update, June 6, 2008 Dear PEC Supporters: Today the Supreme Court of Virginia upheld the Circuit Court decisions to dismiss the student contract and charitable trust appeals. Like all of you, we are disappointed with the Court's decision. Future of R-MWC These appeals were our best chance of reviving R-MWC. Now, if there is to be a future for R-MWC, it depends solely on the Trustees of Randolph College recognizing that they have made a grave mistake in making the College coeducational. Given the falling enrollment numbers, the lack of any information on fall admissions figures, and the lackluster attendance at Reunion this year, it appears that Randolph College is in trouble. If these trends continue, the Trustees will likely run through R-MWC's more than $150 million endowment and sell the Maier Museum's permanent collection piece by piece in an attempt to keep Randolph College afloat. Please reach out to the Trustees one more time. Let them know that you are ready, willing, and able to donate time and money to Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Let them know that you are aware that Randolph College is foundering and that help is available - but only with a commitment to the woman's college. Finally, let them know again that they will not receive any donation from you to support the coed Randolph College. The addresses of all current members of the Board of Trustees and Randolph College officers can be found at the end of this update. Future of PEC Although today's Supreme Court decision appears to give nonprofits in Virginia free rein to change their charitable purpose at any time and use previously donated funds for the new purpose, as a Board we continue to strongly support PEC's mission to "preserve diversity of educational choice by supporting women's colleges in general and, more specifically, to preserve Randolph-Macon Woman's College as a college primarily for women." When we raised funds for the charitable trust lawsuit we said that if we won the suit, any surplus funds would go to R-MWC. If we lost, any remaining funds would go toward supporting women's colleges. To honor the intent of our donors and fulfill our charitable purpose, we will use any remaining funds to issue scholarships for women who wish to attend women's colleges. It remains to be seen whether PEC will continue as an organization to raise funds for and manage these scholarships or if we will simply endow a scholarship fund in the name of R-MWC and her alumnae at one or more women's colleges. There are many loose ends that remain from the past two years of litigation, including an ongoing appeal that seeks the return of the $500,000 that was placed with the Circuit Court in the art litigation. It will be several months before all of these matters are resolved and we will continue to keep you posted on the progress of this appeal and on PEC's scholarship efforts.
