Donor/Alumnae Group Announces Bond Will Be Posted To Stop College's Sale of Irreplaceable Art

Lynchburg, VA, December 3, 2007 - The organization of college donors and alumnae seeking to stop the sale of four irreplaceable works of art from the permanent collection of the Maier Museum of Art of Randolph-Macon Woman's College (now Randolph College) will post the required bond today that will temporarily block the sale, Preserve Educational Choice (PEC) announced.

The Supreme Court of Virginia accepted the plaintiffs' recent request to modify the bond requirements for the $1 million bond, allowing the plaintiffs to post $500,000 today and the remaining $500,000 by February 15, 2008.

"We thank the Supreme Court for giving us the extra time we need to raise the additional funds," said Anne Yastremski, executive director of PEC. "The fact that we were able to raise $500,000 from Lynchburg residents, current students, Randolph-Macon Woman's College alumnae and members of the national art community in such a short amount of time demonstrates how committed everyone is to keeping the Maier's art collection intact."

Yastremski pointed out that more than 650 individuals, many of them with no connection to the College, already have contributed money to the effort to preserve the valued collection of American art with gifts ranging from donations of spare change to $100,000 checks.

"We raised the first $500,000 in just two short weeks through the extraordinary generosity of donors who care about these paintings and the larger issue of donor intent," said Yastremski. "We are confident we will be able to raise the remaining $500,000 by the next deadline."
