FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Preserve Educational Choice on Decision to Focus Efforts on Stopping the Sale of any Art from the Maier Museum's Permanent Collection and Terminate Legal Suit about Four Paintings from the Collection Lynchburg, Va., March 7 - Anne Yastremski, Executive Director of Preserve Educational Choice, Inc., issued the following statement today: "Preserve Educational Choice (PEC) has decided to focus ongoing efforts on the charitable trust appeal before the Supreme Court of Virginia that promises full protection for the entire permanent collection of art at the Maier Museum as well as the other charitable assets of Randolph-Macon Woman's College (R-MWC). To this end, the plaintiffs have voluntarily 'nonsuited' the pending litigation over the attempted sale of four paintings from Randolph College's Maier Museum of Art - a suit that represents a subset of the charitable trust appeal. "Unlike the art lawsuit (which was narrowed by Judge Leyburn Mosby, Jr. in February to address just four paintings in the collection), the charitable trust lawsuit may provide permanent protection for all of the art in the Maier Museum's collection by recognizing that Randolph College does not have the right to use the assets of R-MWC. "We will therefore focus on preparing for and prevailing in the charitable trust and student contract lawsuits scheduled to be heard by the Virginia Supreme Court in April. If the College decides to proceed with a sale of art before the Supreme Court can rule, a decision that would be reckless in the extreme and counter to their public promises to the contrary, the art suit can be readily re-filed to halt the sale. "Now, however, our legal team's time needs to be spent on preparing for the upcoming Supreme Court arguments, which we are confident will result in a decision that will both restore Randolph-Macon Woman's College and preserve its historic permanent art collection." ###Preserve Educational Choice, Inc. is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization founded in September 2006 to oppose the R-MWC Board of Trustees' move to make the college coeducational and adopt "global honors" as a curricular focus. Supporters include more than 1,000 R-MWC alumnae, students, parents, faculty, staff, and former trustees united by a concern for the college's future.
